Gene Bartley would like to announce that he is a candidate for governor elect for the Mo-Ark District for the Kiwanis year 2010-2011.  Gene is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Conway, Arkansas.

Gene lives in Conway with his wife, Jan, who is the Administrative Assistant to the Dean of the College of Business, at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.  They are proud parents of 3 sons; Ryan and Randy who both live in Conway, and Clay who resides in Alpharetta, GA.  They are very proud grandparents to two grandsons, Bryton in Conway and Amos in Alpharetta.

Gene is the Assistant Controller for Virco Mfg. Corporation, a manufacturer of school furniture and other public seating.  He has been an employee of Virco for 28 years, after spending 1 year in public accounting and 3 years with Coca Cola Bottling Company, in Little Rock.

Gene received a B.B.A. and also an M.B.A. degree from the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.  He also has operated a small tax preparation business in Conway since 1981.

Gene has always been active in local community organizations and has served on the boards of Conway Counseling Associates, the Volunteer Counsel for the Human Development Center, and the Heart Association.  He is a graduate of the Faulkner County Leadership Institute, and an active leader in his local church where he serves as an elder.

Gene has been a member of the Conway Kiwanis Club for over 26 years, and has 25 years of perfect attendance, and a member of the Legion of Honor.  He has served his local club in all of its elective positions.  He served as Treasurer for 4 years, Secretary for 10 years in three different stints, and was a Distinguished Club President in 1994.  He served Division 21 as Lt. Governor two different times, in 2000 and 2005. He is currently serving as the District Trustee from Region IX.

Gene has been active in the Missouri-Arkansas activities in a number of capacities.  He served two years as the Arkansas coordinator for HOBY, was an original member of the district TAG team, and the first Arkansas coordinator for TAG.

Gene realizes the downward trend of membership in Kiwanis and other service clubs and feels a great need in our communities to slow and actually reverse this fact, and he promises to work hard to do this.  The only way to “close the backdoor” in our clubs is to ensure that we offer our members and prospective members a very positive and rewarding club experience.  This is the only way we will hold and build our membership.  We have to make the time a member spends in Kiwanis activities worthwhile and meaningful.  Time is one of the most valued assets we have.  Once it is “spent” it can never be used again.

Once we get new members involved in doing service for our communities that will provide the “feel good” attitude that most of us know as Kiwanians.  Serving the needy should fulfill us; and it will. We just need more members to provide more of that Kiwanis service, and we have to have good club meetings and new clubs to obtain those needed numbers.

Kiwanis International has given us some great tools for improving our club experience, we must now put them to use.  Let us strive to Make our Show the Best Show in Town; it has to be….. The children of the world are depending on us!
